Make time for connectipedia

May 27, 2008 12:35 PM

Like many foundations, MMT has been building a "knowledge management" system to archive information in an accessible way to help us be the best grantmakers we can be. But we've been approaching this task with a bigger end in mind.

Why, we asked ourselves, would we set up a system that only MMT could use when the need for good information is shared by other foundations... and nonprofit organizations and public agencies and official decision makers and citizen volunteers and... in fact, everyone working for the common good?? Wouldn't that be a smarter investment for us to make?

What if there was a place where we could all exchange what we learn as we go about our daily business? What if nonprofits could see the data and information that foundations use in their due diligence process? What if organizations and people could easily determine which foundations' interests match their project goals? What if foundations could quickly see what groups are working on an issue they are investigating? And so on...

Well, we are building such a place. A place where people and organizations can connect about subjects and places. A place called connectipedia...

Want to know more? Want to see connectipedia in action? Want to find out how you can be part of all this? Attend the public launch event at:

2 - 3:30 p.m., Tuesday, June 10
Jean Vollum Natural Capital Center
aka Ecotrust (second floor conference center)
721 NW Ninth Ave.
Portland OR 97209

We would love you to be part of this event and celebration. Several renowned geeks will be there! We're not requiring folks to register, but if you plan to attend, please send a quick rsvp email.

If you can't make it to Ecotrust, you can still witness the launch. We will be webcasting the event.

After June 10th, connectipedia will be open for business!

This sounds exciting!

I use online technology to do classes for small, interactive groups....

recently, realized I have people online at same time from 3 Contients and 4 countries

WOW...glad you are developing this new resource.

Thanks

This is a dream of mine to have those that have resources connect with those of us searching for resources!

This is arriving at a great time for me as we're just replacing our Lab computers and looking for new computers and lap top computers for our students and teachers.

What a terrific idea! It is very much what we are working on at Samaritan Health Services with our free grant listing service, ScanGrants:

http://www.scangrants.com/

We are working hard to facilitate the search process for grants, scholarships and other types of funding for experienced and novice researchers, front-line clinicians and students in the health sciences and those in the community/public health communities. We also want to showcase the use of Web 2.0 technologies in the nonprofit world.

Not everyone looking for grants has hours to spend trolling through Google and unless they are affiliated with a major university they usually don’t have access to expensive proprietary databases like Community of Science. That is where ScanGrants can help.

Connectipedia sounds way cool! You go, group!!

Sweet! I'll be there!

I've often been envious of other people's extensive grant databases, and how quickly these lists go obsolete-I'd love to have a place to share my research and learn what others are finding.

Hi, Mazarine. It sure does sound like Connectipedia is the tool we have all been waiting for. Maybe we can meet on Tuesday and talk research and Web 2.0. Do you mean research about grants, by the way, or scientific research or social science research?

And it is indeed dismaying how many of the listings on the free grant listing databases and those on the sites of foundations themselves are for grants the deadlines for applications for which have long since passed.

We have designed ScanGrants so that only current listings are shown. That way, users’ hopes are not raised about a grant only to be shattered moments later as they realize that the deadline was months or years before.

I know what you mean about envying other people's databases. At ScanGrants, we are really trying to equalize things for those people who have no access to such treasure troves.
