Phoebe O'Leary
Director, Grants Administration
What I do at MMT:
I oversee application processing, grant and loan awards, and award monitoring; manage development of the MMT's application software and database; and try to make the online application experience as simple and user-friendly as possible.
What was your life experience before you came to MMT and how does it contribute to your work at MMT?
My earliest career was learning all aspects of my family’s refrigeration manufacturing business in New York, followed by five subsequent years in the video production industry, where I learned that hunting down b-rolls in the middle of the night isn't nearly as exciting as it sounds. I finally realized my true passion was in the nonprofit sector, and spent the following 10 years in development with health care and arts organizations, first as a development assistant and then as development/ community relations director, where I handled grantwriting, direct mail, major gifts, and special events. I switched to the grantmaking side in 2000, working for a small family foundation before joining Meyer Memorial Trust eight years ago. I feel very fortunate to spend my days assisting all the wonderful organizations across our state.
What high school did you attend?
I moved around a lot and went to school in New York, Utah, Alberta, and Connecticut. The last high school I went to was in Sandy, Utah.
When you graduated from high school, what did you want to be?
A Rockette at Radio City Music Hall.
How long did you follow that plan, where did it lead?
I decided against auditioning when a) I never grew past 5 feet tall, and b) I found out they have to sew their own costumes...
If I met my high school self, I would say:
Don't stress about always being the weird new kid; being different is okay.
What were your favorite extracurricular activities in high school? What did you do for fun?
Roller skating, dancing, and going to the beach.
What was your favorite music to listen to?
Punk/New wave (The Clash, Psychedelic Furs, Ramones, etc.)
Complete this sentence: In high school, among my classmates I was most likely to...
...avoid joining clubs. Although, I was tempted to join the ski club because they got so much time off in the winter!
You don't know me unless you know this about me:
I can't survive without a cup of English tea right after I wake up and again before I go to bed.
