MMT announces $1.35 million in direct assistance

January 19, 2010

Meyer Memorial Trust announced today that it has awarded nearly $1.35 million to nonprofit organizations in Oregon to help provide direct assistance to Oregonians and those in Clark County, Washington, whose lives have been made more vulnerable by the economic recession.

“These awards signal that Meyer Memorial Trust recognizes the ongoing importance of helping families meet their basic needs in this economy,” said Doug Stamm, CEO of MMT. “We want to help alleviate suffering in our communities, and encourage others to contribute what they can. These needs are not going away anytime soon.”

In addition to supporting food and shelter needs, MMT is providing help with utilities costs and access to other federal and state anti-poverty programs.

Grants included:

  • $500,000 to Oregon Food Bank to purchase nearly one and a half million pounds of nutritious food to distribute throughout Oregon and Clark County, Washington. OFB reports that an average of 240,000 people eat from emergency food boxes each month over the past year, a number that is up 20% over the year before. MMT funds would provide up to 24,000 additional food boxes.

  • $250,000 to Oregon Energy Services for utilities assistance in communities outside the Portland metropolitan area. According to the State of Oregon, the poorest Oregonians pay more than 44% of their household income toward home energy costs, and existing utility assistance programs help fewer than half of families that need help. MMT funds will provide assistance to an estimated 1,125 low-income households.
  • $200,000 to United Way of the Columbia-Willamette for its Community Relief Fund to help provide rent and utilities assistance to hundreds of low-income families in the Portland metropolitan, including Clark County, Washington.
  • $200,000 to Umpqua Community Development Corporation and partnering affordable housing organizations across Oregon to expand foreclosure prevention and assistance and financial training for hundreds of vulnerable families. Oregon’s foreclosure filings have increased by 77% over the past year and a half and are expected to worsen in 2010.
  • $198,254 to One Economy Corporation to help families in seven Oregon counties who qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit access that federal benefit, at an average of $1,500 per filer. One Economy reports that uninformed filers lose $12 billion in income each year because they don’t realize they qualify. EITC is recognized as one of the most effective anti-poverty strategies because it lifts more than five million people above the poverty level annually. This project will also help people access federal and state child care tax credits.

It's unusual for MMT to consider requests from three large arts organization in a single meeting, so we thought it might be useful to provide some background and context for these grants.

While 60% of MMT's funding has gone to organizations addressing rising demand for health and human services during this economically challenging time, we recognize the importance of supporting arts and culture groups, which contribute to the quality of life of our communities and region with both cultural and economic contributions.

Historically, MMT has been a relatively strong funder of Portland's five largest arts organizations, with a total of nearly $21 million collectively awarded to Portland Art Museum, Oregon Symphony, Portland Center Stage, Portland Opera, and Oregon Ballet Theatre since 1982. Foundation support has represented a larger portion of these arts organization's budgets because until recently, Oregon was ranked 53rd among states and territories (behind Guam and American Samoa) in government support of the arts per capita. (Oregon now ranks 40th.)

Two years ago, MMT and other area arts funders began to converse with Portland's five largest arts organizations to better understand their business models and what they need to achieve financial stability, in addition to artistic excellence. As a result of these discussions and a study by a nationally recognized arts consultant, MMT has determined it can most appropriately assist the groups with two years of operating support limited to approximately 1% of the organizations' operating budgets, with the possibility of an additional two years. During this period, MMT will not entertain additional proposals for operating and project support from these five groups.

MMT will, however, continue to invite proposals in both Responsive and Grassroots Grants programs from other arts and culture organizations across Oregon and Clark County, Washington.

May 2009 Grants Announced

Shared Resources RFP

Eight of the most recent awards were made to organizations that applied to the RFP for Shared Service/Space designed to help nonprofit organizations operate more efficiently through sharing resources.

According to Program Officer Paul Reich, who shepherded the RFP, "These projects most closely met our criteria for planning grants that held significant potential for achieving greater efficiency, accessing additional resources, and improved service coordination, and other outcomes. Strong proposals had committed key partners where the project represented the top priority for their respective organizations. Operating Funds Proposals Invited: First Deadline April 15th

March 03, 2009

As part of MMT’s response to very challenging economic conditions, MMT is launching an Operating Funds grant program to help small- and mid-sized organizations that have been hit particularly hard by the current economic crisis.

The first deadline for proposals is April 15, 2009.

The purpose of this initiative is to help sustain small- and mid-sized organizations that play a critical role in their communities, whose stability is seriously jeopardized due to current economic conditions and for which a modest cash infusion will be critical to weathering the economic storm. Organizations for which a cash infusion is not critical to stability, but wish to request funds to maintain or expand current programming, should continue to apply for support through MMT’s Responsive and Grassroots Grant programs, as usual.

Organizations in all fields/focus areas may apply; priority will be given to those providing critical human services and those who fill other key roles in their communities.

More information (including instructions for applying) is located here.

MMT Grants Emergency Funds to Reduce Hunger

January 21, 2009

Emergency food began arriving at Oregon Food Bank this week as a result of a large grant from Meyer Memorial Trust. MMT made recent grants to Oregon Food Bank and Oregon Hunger Relief Task Force to help address the growing food emergency in Oregon resulting from worsening economic conditions.

Recent demand is up an average 20% at regional banks over the same period last year. Food supply is down, causing OFB to purchase 21% of the food it distributed last year (compared with 5% in prior years).

OFB is using MMT's grant of $500,000 to purchase 17 truckloads of nutritious food that will be distributed to a statewide network of 20 regional food banks and 366 emergency food pantries.

"Community awareness of hunger grows around the holdiays," said Doug Stamm, CEO of Meyer Memorial Trust, "but we are making this grant now because we want to help make Oregonians aware of hunger and the need for generosity the rest of the year. We're challenging the community to match – and hopefully exceed – our gift. Can any of us stand by and let any one of us go hungry?"

In addition to providing funds for emergency food, MMT also awarded $50,000 in operating support to the Oregon Hunger Relief Task Force for its advocacy efforts on issues affecting hunger and the root causes of poverty. MMT's support enables HRTF's executive staff to work with other poverty advocates, state agency staff, and policy makers to protect basic needs programs, remove barriers to participation, and make cost-effective enhancements where possible.

OHRTF works on food stamp outreach and enrollment, noting that in Oregon, 21% of those eligible for food stamps [around 117,800 people] do not receive them, leaving $94 million in unused federal benefits that would be spent locally on groceries.

Willamette River Initiative Strategies Announced

October 29, 2008

MMT has announced the goals of its Willamette River Basin Restoration Initiative and the first two strategies it will implement in support of these goals.

MMT has set two ambitious goals in this initiative:
• to achieve meaningful, measurable improvements in the health of the Willamette River and selected tributaries by 2015, and
• to create a national model for effective approaches to restoration of large, complex ecological systems.

The first strategy will leverage MMT funds with state restoration funds through Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board's Willamette Special Investment Partnership. Through this strategy, MMT and OWEB will support projects aimed at restoring channel complexity and reconnecting the mainstem Willamette to its floodplain, two ecological objectives widely recognized as key to improving the health and resiliency of the river. MMT will provide up to $1.8 million over the next two years to support scientific assessments, preliminary site designs, outreach and other activities. More information is available from OWEB.

The second strategy will support multi-year integrated approaches to improving watershed conditions in selected Willamette River tributaries, working with Bonneville Environmental Foundation's Model Watershed Program. MMT will invest up to $1 million in this strategy over the next two years. More information is available from BEF.

Additional strategies will be announced as they are developed.

More information about MMT's Willamette River Initiative is available elsewhere on MMT's website.
In addition, our website includes a slide presentation about the initiative.

Adding up the numbers

August 05, 2008

We just compiled (thanks to Sayer Jones, our senior accountant) a graph depicting the $amount of our assets + the $amount of our grant payments. We thought you might like to see what it equals:

Did you notice we are approaching the $1.2 billion mark? That feels like real money!

And consider this: the amount we have given away ($404.6 million) is more than half (about 60%) of what we have left ($678 million).

Affordable Housing Request for Proposals

July 16, 2008

Meyer Memorial Trust is announcing the third prong of its Affordable Housing Initiative and inviting proposals for projects that make delivery of resident services more financially sustainable for nonprofit housing providers.

Proposed projects could include:

  • Efforts to modify project underwriting so that resident services delivery is an allowable project expenses,
  • Education of policy makers on the need for ongoing funding of resident services,
  • Efforts by nonprofit housing providers to generate increased unrestricted income (through increased contributions, decreased compliance costs, decreased project debt, or increased earned income streams) to finance delivery of resident services,
  • Consolidation of nonprofit housing providers so they can generate economies of scale and thereby increase unrestricted income.

MMT welcomes Initial Inquiries for this RFP by August 25, 2008. Please submit Initial Inquiries through MMT's standard online application process. The short project description in the online Initial Inquiry application must be titled RFP Affordable Housing III. MMT anticipates making awards in the form of grants and program-related investments in the range of $100,000-$300,000 to selected projects. Funding awards will be announced by the end of the first quarter of 2009. Please email Ann Lininger if you have any questions regarding this RFP.

More information about this RFP and where it fits in MMT's affordable housing strategy is included in this summary of MMT's Affordable Housing Initiative. In addition, it would be useful to review other information about the initiative on our website and our CEO's most recent report before preparing an Initial Inquiry.

2008 Nonprofit Entrepreneur Award Nominations Open

May 20, 2008

Oregon Entrepreneurs Network has announced that nominations are open for the 2008 Tom Holce Awards for Entrepreneurship in the Nonprofit category.

Deadline for nominations is June 16, 2008. More information about the award is available from OEN, including a nomination form.

This award goes to an organization that has shown entrepreneurship and creativity in addressing business and operational issues, achieving strategic goals, and/or creating jobs. This is not an award that will recognize the "good works" an organization delivers to the community. It is meant to honor the unique, entrepreneurial ways of operating that help an organization fulfill its mission. It is given at the discretion of the OEN Board of Directors and is judged by a panel of nonprofit and foundation leaders from across Oregon.

We at the Meyer Memorial Trust are especially interested in the award because it is a program whose mission is to promote the kind of vision and entrepreneurship that Fred Meyer, whose will established MMT, brought to his own company. To demonstrate our support for this program, MMT is participating in judging applicants for this award and providing financial assistance. We encourage nonprofits to step forward and apply.

The winner will be featured at OEN's annual awards dinner on Sept. 18. At the event, each finalist will be showcased in a professionally produced video.

Keynote Presentation
Lose Control: Why and How Web 2.0 Matters to Nonprofits
This presentation offers a big picture view of how and why new media matters for nonprofits. It includes an overview of the major content distribution tools that are covered more fully in the breakout sessions that follow.

Presenter, Holly Ross, Incoming Executive Director, NTEN (Nonprofit Technology Network)

Breakout sessions:
The Anatomy of an Email Campaign
Every time we turn around, we get another tip about how to make our email campaigns more engaging and successful. But a successful email campaign is more than just the latest tips. In this session, we'll analyze a successful campaign from start to finish and tell you how to package all those best practices into one amazing and effective campaign.

Presenter: Holly Ross

The ROI of Blogging

What good is a blog? It can be a low-cost, global marketing machine, a community polling tool and a motivator for your organization's stake-holders - or it can be an ill-advised experiment that runs out of steam and does more harm than good. Let's have an accessible but challenging discussion about how to make it the former instead of the latter; blogging can be your window into a dynamic and powerful new world.

Presenter: Marshall Kirkpatrick has written for some of the most widely read technology blogs on the web, including Read/WriteWeb, TechCrunch and AOL's Social Software Weblog.

Do I Need an iPod for That?
The host and producer of Oregon Museum of Science and Industry's weekly podcast “Sound Science” talks about OMSI’s experience creating and sharing content using this new media tool.

Presenter: Anders Liljeholm has been teaching science with OMSI for 15 years. As a program developer, he creates new demonstrations, teacher lesson plans, and hosts OMSI’s weekly podcast.

RSS as SOP
Make distributing content like news, events, audio, video and more as easy as pushing a button. Why and how Real Simple Syndication is an essential tool for nonprofit websites, and why and how it helps us understand what new media is all about.

Presenter: Matthew Latterell, Executive Director of netCorps, has provided technology assistance to nonprofits for ten years. His primary focus of the last several years has been on helping organizations integrate appropriate and powerful communication tools in their work.

Make YouTube YourTube
Video is one of the most compelling media for sharing and telling your story to friends, community, and the world. Online opportunities are popping up quicker and quicker to help nonprofits get messages out to a wider audience. We will discuss the opportunities for sharing your video content with the world online, including connections to Google Checkout for Nonprofits.

Presenter: Amy Sample Ward, communications and learning associate at MMT, has worked with nonprofit organizations in technology and new media for 5 years. She graduated from Valapariaso University with a degree in New Media - Journalism and English and enjoys finding ways to keep the nonprofit sector in the Northwest on top of opportunities for helping themselves with new media technologies.

Announcing Pt. 2 of Communicating in the Age of New Media

October 02, 2007

Nonprofits Communicating in the Age of New Media, Part Two: Distributing the Content You Create

Friday, October 19
9 a.m. to noon
Pacific Northwest College of Art
1241 NW Johnson
Free!

Register online now.
(But since space is limited this time, please register only if you really intend to attend.)

Background – Summary of Part One: Creating Video Content

One of the key elements of New Media is that there are not just a handful of creators of media and vast numbers of passive recipients as there tends to be in more traditional media. In New Media, everyone can participate and create and distribute content. At the first New Media for Nonprofits event in March, we talked about creating content, and spent most of the day showing examples of videos nonprofits have created to tell their stories. (We could have selected any number of topics to feature, but since we have received the most inquiries about videos, that's where we decided to start.)

We presented a number of models local nonprofits have used to create AFFORDABLE videos:

1. In Kind Volunteer Model: Nonprofit attracts interested media professionals to contribute their talents to produce a video (Big Brothers Big Sisters)
2. Nonprofit/community media collaboration model: Nonprofit partners with local community media organization to produce a video on important community issue (Southeast Uplift and Portland Community Media)
3. Film school/community organization model: Nonprofit attracts interested students trained by local film school that has community training for students funded by community access cable fees (Northwest Film & Video Center and Outside In; Mt. Hood Cable Regulatory Commission Community Access Capital Grant program)
4. Nonprofit production company collaboration model: Nonprofit video production company collaborates with local nonprofits collaborating on an issue (Green Fire Productions and environmental groups)
5. DIY model: Passionate volunteers learn how to make video taking class from local nonprofit documentary group (Free Geek and Northwest Documentary Arts & Media)

Short Description of Part Two: Distributing the Content You Create

Creating content is not enough. Just as unsatisfying as giving a party that nobody attends, creating content that nobody sees can be rather pointless. We need to know how to put it out there, especially in ways people will respond. This event will offer information about why, how and where to expose your content.

The morning will begin with a presentation by Holly Ross, Director of Programs at NTEN (Nonprofit Technology Network), followed by breakout sessions that focus on particular topics. More information about specific topics will be provided here soon.
