Capacity enhancements can arguably take many forms, including new buildings to expand programs, an electronic health record infrastructure, up-front capital to launch a new program for earned revenue, or creating a loan fund to allow a conservation organization to take advantage of a unique land purchase opportunity. We have supported many of these types of capacity-building PRIs, and encourage you to search our awards database for more information.
I understand that capacity building often takes a more restrictive meaning, referring to core infrastructure (administrative support, accounting, IT, development, etc.). We have funded many of those projects with grants and fewer with PRIs. We would approach a PRI inquiry with an eye toward understanding the intent and strategy behind the request. Because most PRIs are structured as loans, we are also looking closely at credit factors: security (often property or equipment), solid revenue streams, and strong financial ratios. In most cases, capacity building of core infrastructure may not lend itself easily to a structured loan because these factors are weaker or missing.
If you have additional questions, you are always welcome to speak with a Program Officer. Thanks for your question.
Marie, thank you for sharing this great information and good humor! I've taken a few moments to ponder the map and the infographic to reach the following conclusion:
Based on the helpful map and infographic provided by Marie, I've concluded that the plane that takes me out as I mow the lawn in August in the United States (if the lawnmower doesn't get me first according to the map found on the BBC Future website which plots what we are most likely to die from) will be a Boeing 747 operated by Aeroflot. I have confidence though that the nice, well-informed passengers seated in the five rows adjacent an emergency exit will come to my rescue.
Thank you for sharing these horrific (and amusing) bits of trivia with us! @adeptdiva
Thank you for this informative entry on PRIs! Do you see them as a potential Capacity Building Tool or as primarily a component of say a capital campaign?
This event sounds like a great opportunity to learn more about how to access the tools available for helping you tell your story more effectively. During the GivingUSA 2012 webinar last week, more than one panelist cited the need for organizations to tell their stories in a more effective way to reach donors. With so many tools becoming available, we still need to focus on the story telling whether connecting with individuals or institutional funders (who are, by all accounts, comprised of individuals.)
Yes, Jane, we are working on figuring out ways to livestream it, will keep you posted. We've got good brains working on a solution, so I am quite optimistic. We want this to be accessible to all!
Nella, we are working on this and with NTEN and PAGATIM's experience in livestreaming and so forth, I'm pretty confident we'll be able to pull off some way to make it available across the state. I'll keep everyone posted!
Thank you, Nancy! We are so happy to do this. In answer to your question, I think communications and fundraising staff should probably be joined at the hip :) so I think having both there would be great, should provide good ways for them to discover best ways of working together. Hope that helps!
I just wanted to say thanks for the informative and entertaining newsletters.
Also, I am thrilled to see that you are hosting this event on July 19th with these great partner organizations. For those of us from organizations with separate communications and fundraising staff, it might be helpful in ensuring that we are sending the right people within the organization to this, to know who your target audience is for this event. Will the topics be most applicable to communications staff within our organizations or will the topics also be beneficial for the fundraisers to participate in as well?
Thanks,

Is there a way the presentation could be expanded into a webinar for folks who are more than two hours away from Portland? I would love to attend but it requires a five hour drive and an over night stay to attend in person. Jane McAlvage, Kids Unlimited of Oregon; jane@kidsunlimitedoforegon.org
The fox is a rare sighting in Oregon. I am truly amazed. I love that part of the country and my childhood was infused with travels to special spots to picnic or simply get out and walk around. It has become a different country from that time, but it is still a great place to be out on the land, and meet people. In my opinion. The last time I was in Bend for an extended stay was as an author for Nature of Words in late fall. Very cold. It's high desert country. That is why you can many types of weather in one day and one week. High mountain Cascades influences.
Thank you for this excellent speech, the transcript of which I read at the recommendation of a colleague.
You raise many good points. It has been years since I reviewed a list of narcissistic traits...a good reminder of what we don't want to be! And empathy is so very important.
I am your fan. Thank you for the work you do helping Oregonians.
Thank you for those inspiring words and your positive attitude as we work our way out of this economic downturn. It sounds like MMT is coming out stronger and ready to take on the next era of challenges. Congratulations on your ten years at MMT!
We truly appreciate the inspiration and support MMT has provided to Step It Up, Inc.
Thank you, Linda
No. Wordpress is a terrific CMS, but it is aimed more at bloggers and small sites and is not nearly powerful enough for our needs.. We used Drupal instead and you can read more about why we made this decision in an article I wrote about why we picked Drupal.
Once more I find I can "lift" items from your blog and website in general that my nonprofit members (who don't have time to sift through much to find things they need to know) will be interested in and can benefit from. Tim Kral, Executive Director, Oregon Rehabilitation Association.
As a staff member here at MMT, I wanted to pipe up and say just how awesome I think it is that you did a guest blog entry for us. It offers such a useful perspective and you provide great insight. Fabulous job. Thank you.
We appreciate your efforts to share this event. Link tested just fine. Volunteers in Medicine - Bend will see you Thursday morning!

Can we get them to come to Bend/Central Oregon? I bet attendance would be huge!

Thanks to all of you for putting together this opportunity. I hope to learn what other organizations have found to be most useful.

Hi Marie,
Is there any way for folks on the Eastside of the state to participate in the workshop remotely?
Thanks

Hi Doug. I really enjoyed your speech and believe that your predictions for the next 10 years are dead-on:-) Thank you for your leadership and vision.
