In accord with Mr. Meyer's will, the Trust is governed by a five-member board of trustees responsible for the policies, assets, and giving of the foundation. Trustees serve for life or until resignation. Vacancies on the board are filled by the remaining trustees.
The chairmanship of the trustees rotates biannually when a new fiscal year begins on April 1.
In creating the Trust, Fred Meyer demonstrated farsightedness. "Realizing as I do the uncertainties of the future," he stated, "I want my trustees to be able to exercise broad discretion in shaping and carrying out charitable programs which can be tailored to fit changing conditions and problems."
He challenged his trustees, "In all giving, give thought. With thoughtful giving, even small sums may accomplish great purposes."
